Trump renews demand for Opec to cut oil price

US president Donald Trump used his speech before the UN General Assembly today to demand that Opec lower oil prices — an increasingly frequent theme on the eve of US congressional elections.

"Opec and Opec nations are ripping off the rest of the world," Trump said today in New York. "I do not like it, nobody should like it. We defend many of these nations for nothing. And they give us high oil prices. We want them to stop raising oil prices, we want them to start lowering prices and they must contribute substantially to their protection from now on."

Trump, whose decision to re-impose sweeping sanctions on Iran's oil sector has contributed to the recent rise in oil prices, has criticized Opec repeatedly. "The Opec monopoly must get prices down now!" Trump tweeted last week.

Rebukes from Trump and the revival of congressional bills that target Opec have caused concerns in the organization, but its leading producer Saudi Arabia is shrugging off such concerns.

It was not true that Opec is targeting higher prices, Saudi oil minister Khalid al-Falih said on 23 September, in response to Trump's recent statements. "We have been looking at more important aspects – adequacy of supply."
