Perth-based graphite developer Walkabout Resources has begun an "early start" programme for the development of its Lindi Jumbo high-grade graphite project in Tanzania.

The programme includes procurement, manufacturing and early site work activities in China, Tanzania and Australia.

An engineering, procurement and construction contract for long-lead items has been awarded to a Chinese company and a construction contract has been signed with a Tanzanian service provider for early site works and road infrastructure. Funding of the "early start" programme has been enabled through share placement.

Walkabout said the programme will allow the project to get underway before project funding has been finalised. It is expected that development capital of around $27.8mn will be needed.

A mining licence for the Lindi Jumbo project was awarded by the Tanzanian government in August 2018. The project is expected to start commercial production nine to 12 months after funding has been finalised. It has an ore reserve of 5.5mn t grading 17.9pc total graphitic carbon estimated to contain 987,000t of graphite.

A definitive feasibility indicates that the project should be able to produce around 40,000 t/yr of graphite concentrate over a period of 24 years. Binding and non-binding offtake agreements have been entered into with a variety of partners in the build-up to the project entering its operational phase.
