Coated steel prices fall in India amid demand slump

India's coated steel prices have fallen this month, with downstream demand muted during the continuing monsoon season and falling investment in the construction and industrial sectors.

Steel mills have dropped domestic prices of various coated sheet this week by 1,500 rupees/t ($22/t) since the first week of July. A Mumbai-based mill was offering galvanised sheets between 0.8-3mm with a low zinc coating of 80 grams/square meter (gsm) at Rs49,500/t ex-mill. Offers in the first week of June for similar sheet were around Rs52,000/t ex-works.

In response to falling prices, certain mills have started offering sheet with reduced quantities of zinc coating of 60-70gsm at lower prices instead of the the usual 90-120gsm zinc coating, said a Hyderabad- based trader.

Prices of colour-coated sheet have also fallen. Offers for colour coated sheet of 0.5mm thickness and a zinc coating of 90-100gsm were at Rs55,500/t in north India. Offers for similar material were at Rs59,000-61,000/t during the first week of June.

The Argus assessment for Indian hot-rolled coil, which is the substrate for coated sheet, dropped last week to Rs38,000/t, a fall of Rs2,750/t since the first week of June.

An anti-dumping duty recommended by India's commerce ministry last week on zinc and aluminium coated sheets provided little support to domestic prices. These duties have yet to come into effect as they await being notified in India's official gazette.

Demand has reduced from consumer segments because of lower spending on construction and industrial capacity expansions, said Mumbai-based research firm Quesrow Consulting's Sachin Shetty. Coated sheet are used for roofing applications in pre-engineered buildings for industrial purposes, as well as body panels for consumer durables.

Capital expenditure on new projects, including real estate, construction and industrial assets, has been dropping from Rs2.22 trillion in September 2018 to Rs490bn in June, according to the latest data from the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy.

Domestic demand is seasonally weak during June-September because of lower spending on consumer durables such as refrigerators and air-conditioners. But this is likely to see an increase as farm incomes are boosted after the harvest in October and the start of the Hindu festival season. Monsoon rains also limit construction activity that affect demand for roofing sheets.
