Belgian battery materials producer Umicore has signed an agreement with South Korean chemical firm LG Chem for nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) cathode materials.
Umicore has formed a partnership with LG Chem to supply NMC cathodes to LG's battery production facilities from plants in Poland, South Korea and China. The supply agreement will begin in 2020 and cover 125,000t to be delivered over several years.
Most of the material supplied from Umicore will come from its greenfield site in Poland. The site is part of a €660mn investment programme by the company into cathode production and will begin first deliveries in late 2020.
As part of the co-operation, Umicore and LG Chem will have a technology licensing agreement that covers intellectual property rights. They are also discussing a partnership to recycle batteries.
NMC cathodes are a component of lithium-ion batteries, which are used to power most electric vehicles (EVs).
As the automotive industry transitions from fossil fuels to EVs, demand for NMC cathodes and the metals they contain is expected to rise sharply. EV demand is expected to rise to 2.4mn units in 2020 and 10.4mn in 2030, up from around 1.6mn units in 2017, according to Argus Consulting.
