Domestic US hot-rolled coil (HRC) prices slipped this week, despite intensifying talk of increases after some mills filled near-term gaps in their rolling programmes.
The Argus weekly domestic US HRC index fell by $7.75/st to $587/st ex-works Midwest today on 11 indications from buy- and sell-side sources.
Lead times were stable at 5-6 weeks for the third straight week. Lower deals have evaporated, with the floor of the market now around $570/t st, but consumers are still withholding purchases in hope of further softening.
Talk of a possible increase has intensified this week: the Argus HRC index has fallen by 5.2pc since hitting a high of $619.50/st on 14 January. The price is still higher than the low of $488/st recorded at the end of October.
With the coronavirus spreading further afield from China, domestic participants are more concerned about the fear the coronavirus creates than supply impact. Some expect increased discussions around the potential impact of the virus in the coming week.
The spread between #1 busheling scrap delivered US Midwest mills and HRC selling prices fell by 2.3pc to $325.84/st, lower than the spread of $383.80/st a year ago.
HRC import prices into Houston rose by $20/st to $600/st ddp on South Korean offers. Market participants voiced scepticism that imported HRC would be bought at those prices, owing to low domestic levels and long lead times for imports.
Plate prices fell by $10/st to $676.50/st, with lead times remaining around 4-5 weeks. One buyer said mills may be mulling a price cut to spur buying as demand remains weak.
Futures prices in the CME HRC futures market all rose in the last week. March HRC prices jumped up by $22/st to $575/st, while April future prices rose by $14/st to $565/st. May prices increased by $17/st to $565/st, while June prices rose by $13/st to $564/st. July futures prices increased by $9/st to $560/st, while August HRC future prices rose by $13/st to $566/st. September futures prices increased by $13/st to $567/st, with the highest futures prices for the year outside of March at $567/st from September through the end of the year, up by $7/st compared to the prior week's high.
