Vietnam's fertilizer sector avoids coronavirus curbs

Vietnam's fertilizer producers will largely avoid new government measures announced today to curb the country's coronavirus outbreak.

The government from midnight local time (17:00 GMT) on 1 April until 15 April has ordered Vietnamese residents to stay at home and can only go out for food, essential items or urgent medical services. The government also temporarily closed borders between Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia to restrict travellers but not goods.

But the country's fertilizer production is unaffected by these measures, according to domestic industry participants and producers, which means domestic supplies should be unaffected ahead of the application season starting around May.

Vietnam has seen weak fertilizer demand since the start of this year because of drought and saltwater intrusion problems affecting fertilizer offtake by growers. The widening coronavirus outbreak across Vietnam and other southeast Asian countries have also posed challenges to product distribution and businesses across the fertilizer sector.
