China's Beijing city will take measures to promote the development of new energy vehicles (NEV) and step up infrastructure construction for fifth-generation (5G) telecom networks.

The city is on track to build at least 50,000 new NEV charging points and around 100 battery exchange stations before the end of 2022. This aims to encourage more potential auto consumers to choose NEVs.

China's government reaffirmed its support for NEV industry through a variety of measures, including introducing battery exchange stations where NEV drivers can change fully charged batteries.

China's NEV production and sales rose in May from April. It produced 84,000 NEVs in May, up by 5pc from 80,000 in April, but down by 25.8pc from May 2019. Sales increased by 13.9pc from April but declined by 23.5pc from May 2019 to 82,000 NEVs, according to data from China's automotive manufacturers association.

5G telecom networks

Beijing aims to build 13,000 new 5G base stations in 2020, which is expected to bring the total number of stations in the city to over 30,000.

China's academy of information and communications technology (CAICT) forecasts that the country's 5G phone shipments will rise to 180mn units by the end of 2020.

The country's four main telecom service providers - China Mobile, China Unicom, China Telecom and China Broadcasting Network - are on track to build a total of 600,000 5G base stations by the end of this year to consolidate infrastructure support. There are 198,000 base stations, as of the end of March.
