Unilever to sell detergent in paper-based bottles

Consumer products giant Unilever plans to begin selling laundry detergent in bottles derived from paper beginning next year.

The recyclable, paper-based laundry detergent bottles will be used by Unilever's OMO brand, also known as Persil, Skip and Breeze. The bottles will debut in Brazil by early-2022, followed by Europe and other regions.

Unilever developed a prototype of the paper-based bottle in partnership with the Pulpex consortium, its collaboration with Diageo, Pilot Lite and other entities. The technology involves spraying the inside of the paper-based bottles with a proprietary water-repellent coating so they can hold liquids.

Unilever also plans to create paper-based bottles for its hair care products.

This development is part of Unilever's 2020 commitment to eliminate the use of fossil fuels in its cleaning and laundry products by 2030. Unilever also committed to halving its virgin plastic use by 2025 and is aiming for net-zero carbon emissions from all its products by 2039.

Unilever in April launched recyclable HDPE toothpaste tubes in France and recyclable PE dishwashing packaging in numerous European countries.
