Imports of hot-rolled coil (HRC) products in June could hit their highest levels since July 2016.
Currently imports licenses for HRC into the US are for over 242,000 metric tonnes (t) (267,000 short tons), which, if realized, would be the highest level of imports since the US imported 302,000t of HRC in July 2016, according to data from the US Department of Commerce.
Importers file licenses when they intend to import steel into the US. The volumes in the licenses filed generally outpace the final import volumes.
The potential June HRC volumes outpace May's imports of 210,000t of HRC products, which were the highest levels since October 2018.
Canada accounted for the majority of the imports with 98,414t, followed by South Korea with 51,069t. Japan represented roughly 15pc or 36,446t, and Turkey with 31,002t.
The US has been facing a shortage of flat-rolled steel since mid-August 2020, when the Argus US Midwest HRC assessment hit a low of $450/st. Prices have since nearly quadrupled to $1,700/st ex-works on 29 June.
Buyers have complained that they have had a hard time finding spot steel on the market, while contracts from US steel mills have been held below maximum allowed levels.
