North China's Baoding has deployed 100 hydrogen heavy trucks on the road connecting the city and the state-level new area of Xiong'an in Hebei province.

The move is part of the country's efforts to reach carbon neutrality by 2060 and for carbon dixoide emissions to peak by 2030, along with Baoding city's plan to bring 1,000 hydrogen heavy trucks on to roads during 2021-24.

The power system and battery of the 100 vehicles is independently developed and produced by key Chinese auto producer Great Wall's wholly-owned subsidiary FTXT Energy.

Baoding is also on target to build 6-10 hydrogen refuelling stations, with a combined 40 t/d of hydrogen refueling capacity, in the coming years. The first station is designed to have a 1 t/d refueling capacity. The outlets will also provide gasoline, gas refuelling and electricity recharging services.

The Hebei city, in partnership with cities including Beijing, Zhangjiakou and Zhengzhou, has applied to the central government to set up a state-level demonstration and promotion city cluster for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. It has set a goal of deploying 1,330 hydrogen fuel cell vehicles over the long term for heavy freight, logistics, passenger traffic and private passenger cars.

The central government has stepped up efforts to promote hydrogen energy this year to meet its carbon reduction targets. The capital Beijing is on track to bring 3,000 hydrogen vehicles on to roads and build 37 hydrogen refuelling stations by the end of 2023. It expects the number of hydrogen vehicles on the roads to exceed 10,000 units by 2025.

The country's coal-rich Inner Mongolia region has also laid out plans to develop seven wind and solar power projects that could produce almost 67,000 t/yr of hydrogen, as part of a push to raise output to 500,000 t/yr by 2025.

State-controlled oil firm Sinopec has begun developing green hydrogen projects this year, with a target to become the number one hydrogen company in China by 2025.

China's hydrogen demand is forecast to reach 60mn t by 2050, accounting for 10pc of the country's energy consumption, according to government-supported industry group the China Hydrogen Alliance.
