Ukraine has committed to phase out coal by 2035 and Slovenia by the early 2030s, while Poland confirmed its plan for a 2049 coal exit at the UN Cop 26 climate conference in Glasgow.

Ukraine and Poland joined 188 countries and organisations in the global coal to clean power transition statement, which encourages developed economies to phase out coal by 2030.

Parties have also committed to cease governmental support and stop issuing licenses for the construction of new coal-fired plants.

A Polish climate ministry spokesperson confirmed the country's commitment to phase out coal "in the 2040s". Polish energy minister Anna Moscow in a tweet confirmed that the country will phase out its coal-fired power generation by 2049, a target set earlier this year.

Ukraine also joined the powering past coal alliance (PPCA) along with other European countries including Estonia and Slovenia. The PPCA aims to phase out coal by the early 2030s, infrastructure minister Jernej Vrtovec said. Croatia, a member of the alliance since July 2021, earlier this week announced it will phase out coal by 2033.

Poland is highly dependent on carbon intensive coal and lignite-fired generation, which accounted for 51.6pc and 26.4pc, respectively, of the country's energy mix so far this year, higher than the 50.1pc and 25.4pc a year earlier.

Ukraine also relies on coal, with thermal generation accounting for nearly 28pc of total electricity production in 2020. Ukraine's largest private-sector generator, Dtek, also pledged to exit coal by 2040, and the country is expected to invest significantly in renewable energy. Dtek is expected to install a second battery storage system in the country by 2022 and renewable developer CWP aims to install a 73MW wind farm in the county.
