Section of Keystone oil pipeline restarts

  • Market: Crude oil
  • 15/12/22

Canadian pipeline operator TC Energy restarted part of the 622,000 b/d Keystone pipeline system that was unaffected by last week's 14,000 bl spill in Kansas.

The section that was reopened on 14 December extends from Hardisty, Alberta, to Wood River/Patoka, Illinois.

The segment of the pipeline affected by the leak, which runs to the key storage hub in Cushing, Oklahoma, remains isolated as an investigation and cleanup continues. Before restarting, the operator will have to satisfy conditions laid out by the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA).

Past spill-related shutdowns of the pipeline suggest it could be several months before the pipeline system returns to its full capacity.

The 2,600-mile pipeline system originates in Hardisty delivering crude to key market hubs including Patoka, Cushing and Port Arthur, Texas.
