South Korean steel producer Posco will start normal operations at all its 17 rolling mills at the Pohang Works operations from 20 February, five months after they were suspended because of damage following a typhoon.

The company had restarted its core hot-rolling operations last month along with 15 rolling mills.

The second hot-rolling mill, the core of the steelworks, had to replace 11 out of 15 motor drives, a device that supplies electricity to the motors of rolling mills, making short-term supply difficult, the company said on 1 February. Because of this, it could have taken more than a year to normalise operations, it added.

The restart of operations was a result of competitors such as Nippon Steel, Hyundai Steel and Indian steelmaker JSW helping with recovery efforts, the steel producer said.

Posco's operating income dropped by 46.7pc on the year to 4.9 trillion won ($3.9bn) in 2022. Operating profits suffered a loss of around W1.3 trillion from Pohang's production suspension, the company said on 27 January.

South Korean steel production dropped by 6.5pc on the year to 65.9mn t last year. Posco is among the world's top 10 steel producers, with a production of over 40mn t/yr.
