Norwegian fertilizer producer Yara is operating at 65pc of its European ammonia production capacity, with global output down by 750,000t in 2022.
Yara's 2022 ammonia production totalled 6.51mn t, down from 7.26mn t in 2021. Fourth-quarter production fell to 1.57mn t from 1.76mn t a year earlier.
As a result of falling production, Yara's ammonia trade fell to 1.77mn t in 2022 from 2mn t in 2021.
Gas price hikes in the wake of the Ukraine conflict curtailed European ammonia output last year. Yara's European weighted-average gas cost was $31.80/mn Btu in 2022, up from just $11.70/mn Btu in 2021.
As a result of these "significant raw material supply challenges", Yara opted for "proactive curtailment to optimally manage market conditions" in 2022, chief executive Svein Tore Holsether said.
In total, Yara cut back its ammonia output by 1.7mn t last year — 35pc of its European capacity.
According to Argus consulting estimates, Yara's European ammonia plants — including its UK facility at Immingham — operate with an average consumption of 34mn Btu for each tonne of ammonia produced. At this efficiency, 1.7mn t of European production cuts would lead to a reduction in gas consumption of roughly 1.4bn m³.
But Yara estimates that its first-quarter 2023 gas expenditure will be $320mn down on the year as the European gas market settles.
TTF prompt prices have dropped over the past eight weeks as mild weather limited demand and LNG imports remained quick. And as Europe approaches the end of winter, forecasts are for milder weather, while storage sites remain relatively full — particularly in key markets such as Germany and the Netherlands.
Argus' TTF everyday prices this year have been assessed at €63/MWh on average, around half last year's €121/MWh average. But the resumption of ammonia production in Europe depends not just on production costs, but also on Yara's ability to profit from it. Yara said it "will not produce or sell at negative margins".
Yara also regularly sources its ammonia externally, given its structurally short position in Europe. With Russian output removed, Yara said it moved to suppliers in the Middle East, north Africa, North America and the Caribbean in 2022.
