Levmet re-enters steel trading

Monaco-based physical and derivatives commodities trading firm Levmet has re-entered the steel market with the launch of its subsidiary Steelmet International.

London-based Steelmet will trade all major products, including hot-rolled and cold-rolled coil, hot-dip galvanised, billet, rebar, wire rod and scrap.

Julian Coates, previously of trading firms Cargill and Macsteel, will lead Steelmet. Giulio Thuburn is commercial director of the business, according to Companies House filings.

Coates, Levmet chairman Paul Chivers and Levmet chief executive Andrew Campbell are listed as directors of the Steelmet, alongside Thuburn.

Coates helped expand Cargill's presence in the European flat steel sector, promoting indexation and futures trading in the southern and north European markets. Steelmet will also offer "tailored financial and risk management solutions", Coates told Argus.

Levmet traded European hot-rolled coil swaps as far back as 2015, when there was a contract on London-based LCH.Clearnet. It now has a more widely adopted risk management tool at it disposal in the CME Group's north European HRC contract.
