Low water levels disrupt Italian coil pickling

Severely low water levels in northern Italy are hampering pickling capability in the hot-rolled coil (HRC) market.

ArcelorMittal CLN has stopped pickling coils that are 8mm and thicker because of a lack of water from the Lecco Lake, which is parallel to its site in Brivio. The situation is likely to continue for a couple of months, sources suggest.

Delna has two coil pickling lines with a combined production capacity of 850,000 t/yr.

Pickling at Arvedi could also be affected to an extent, but the company could not be reached for comment.

Water levels in northern Italy's large natural basins fell over summer last year, in response to a drought in the country. The flow rate of the Po River, Italy's longest river, remains at minimum lows last seen in 2021, according to Italian hydrological association Anbi. Lower-than-average water volumes persist in the great northern lakes, with filling rates at Sebino and Lario at just 20pc and 22pc of their total capacity, respectively.

Pickling and oiling, which descales coil of oxide film and makes it more corrosion resistant, uses a combination of water and hydrochloric acid.

In the UK, Tata Steel is also having issues with its pickling capacity because of a lack of domestically produced industrial acid.

Sources suggest the disruption could be limited, but might see the premium for pickled material compared with dry HRC increasing somewhat. Typically the extra is in the range of €40-€50/t, with current energy costs.
