Qatar Airways has announced plans to expand its network to new destinations this year, alongside flight resumptions and increases in the frequency of flights to several existing locations.
The airline will launch seven new destinations this year – Chittagong, Juba, Kinshasa, Medan, Lyon, Toulouse and Trabzon. Qatar Airways is also resuming flights to 11 destinations: Beijing, Birmingham, Buenos Aires, Casablanca, Marrakesh, Davao, Nice, Phnom Penh, Ras Al Khaimah and Osaka. Multiple destinations on the airline's current network will also enjoy additional flights scheduled for this year.
The expanded operations should result in higher jet fuel demand in Qatar. The country's jet fuel exports significantly dipped to 8,500 b/d in the second half of 2022, from 15,500 b/d in the first half of 2022, Vortexa data shows. The drop in exports came as Qatar was preparing to host the Fifa World Cup football tournament during 20 November- 18 December. This year, to date, Qatar's state-owned QatarEnergy (QE) has issued at least four spot tenders to sell around 13,000 b/d of jet fuel, according to Argus records, but it is unclear if all cargoes were sold.
Qatar Airways also recently signed a five-year partnership with Formula 1, becoming the official airline and global partner of the sports event. Qatar will host the Formula 1 Qatar Airways Grand Prix during 6-8 October, Qatar Moto GP during 17-19 November and the Geneva International Motor Show Qatar in October, which again should boost international travel demand to Qatar during the fourth quarter of the year.
Qatar Airways currently flies to more than 150 destinations worldwide, connecting through its Doha hub, Hamad International Airport (HIA). The airport welcomed over 35mn passengers in 2022, up by 102pc on the year, while overall aircraft movements grew to over 210,000 – a 28pc increase compared with 2021, according to Qatar's civil aviation authority. HIA is currently being expanded, with the first phase of the project that was completed in November last year boosting HIA's capacity to 58mn passengers per year. Once concluded, the second part of the expansion will boost HIA's capacity to over 70mn passengers per year.
