Indonesian PKS exports rise during January-March

Palm kernel shell (PKS) exports from Indonesia rose on the year during January-March as more biomass power plants began operations in Japan, a main PKS buyer in Asia.

Indonesia exported 1.36mn t of PKS in the first quarter of this year, up by 28pc from the same period in 2022, data from Statistics Indonesia show.

Indonesia exported 1.19mn t of PKS to Japan during January-March, up by 26pc on the year. New biomass power plants such as the Yufutsu biomass power plant and Ishikari Bio Energy's biomass power plant started commercial operations during the first quarter of this year, supporting demand for PKS in the country. Many term shipments started this year with new biomass power plants coming on line, an Indonesia-based PKS supplier said.

Indonesia shipped 90,000t of PKS to South Korea in the first quarter, more than double from a year earlier. South Korean independent power producer GS EPS is South Korea's sole PKS buyer, and its PKS consumption volumes can fluctuate depending on its demand for bio solid-recovered fuel (SRF).

Indonesia shipped 47,000t of PKS to Thailand in the first quarter, down by 39pc on the year. Most Thai industrial boilers have the flexibility to switch to co-firing with PKS, wood chips and pellets or oil from coal, when the price of alternative fuels is at a competitive advantage. Both spot coal prices from Indonesia, Thailand's main coal supplier, and spot wood pellet prices decreased, while PKS spot prices stayed firm during the first quarter, making PKS uncompetitive for Thai end-users.

Indonesia shipped 22,000t of PKS to Singapore, a smaller but regular buyer, in the first quarter of this year. A power plant in Tuas, Singapore, co-fires coal with PKS as well as domestic wood chips.

Indonesia also exported 13,000t of PKS to Netherlands, and 4,000t to Malaysia during January-March, with all shipments to the Netherlands in January.

Wood pellet exports

Indonesia exported 152,000t of wood pellets in the first quarter, up by 45pc on the year, as the country gradually increased output capacity.

Of this, Indonesia exported 141,000t of wood pellets to South Korea and 11,000t to Japan.
