Turkey's presidential election will head to a run-off with neither incumbent Recep Tayyip Erdogan nor opposition rival Kemal Kilicdaroglu passing the 50pc threshold needed to win the vote, the national election board said today.
Erdogan received 49.5pc of the vote and Kilicdaroglu 44.9pc, the chairman of the Supreme Election Board Ahmet Yener said according to state news agency Anadolu. Voter turnout was 88.92pc in Turkey and 52.69pc overseas.
Kilicdaroglu heads the Nation Alliance, an ideologically-diverse coalition of six parties.
The deciding vote will be held on 28 May. The delay could hamper efforts to restart exports of Iraqi crude from the Turkish port of Ceyhan. Around 470,000 b/d of crude has been shut in since 25 March.
