Sulphuric acid exports from Japan in April rose by 17pc on the year to 259,200t, latest data from Global Trade Tracker (GTT) show.

April was mostly uneventful for smelters, despite prices moving back into positive territory. Most suppliers were reluctant to release spot cargoes and opted to wait for firmer prices. Producers were reported to be focusing on servicing their usual term contracts, after falling behind on some scheduled shipments earlier this year.

Exports to India more than doubled on the year to 83,000t, while deliveries to Thailand rose by 73pc on the year to 17,600t, supporting export figures for the month. A total of 12,100t was also exported to Malaysia, compared to none last April. But deliveries to the Philippines and Chile fell by 10pc and 9pc on the year to 81,000t and 45,200t respectively, while no cargoes were sent to the USA, compared to 18,900t a year earlier.

Japan exported a total of 1.1mn t of sulphuric acid in the first four months of the year, up by 14pc year-on-year following more deliveries to both India and the Philippines. Exports to India more than doubled to 306,600t, while those to the Philippines rose by 11pc on the year to 449,600t. These deliveries pulled overall export figures during the period upwards and offset falling deliveries to other destinations. Deliveries to Chile and the USA fell by 36pc and 62pc on the year to 92,500t and 21,000t respectively, while deliveries to Thailand also fell by 11pc on the year to 89,600t.
