Erex to test biomass co-firing at Vietnam power plant

  • Market: Biomass

Japanese renewable power developer Erex plans to begin testing biomass co-firing in August at Vietnamese power utility Vinacomin Power's 110MW Na Duong coal-fired power generation plant.

Erex aims to burn a total of 6,000t of locally-procured wood chips by gradually raising the ratio of biomass burned from 5pc to 20pc during August and September. The trial run will be held for around a month and a half. But Erex and Vinacomin Power have not yet decided on a specific biomass co-firing ratio at the power plant, the types and volumes of biomass fuels to be used for commercial operations, and when to begin commercial runs.

Erex has attempted to help boost Vinacomin Power's use of biomass by supporting the transition of coal-fired power plants to biomass-fired and biomass co-fired plants.

Erex has been expanding its biomass business in Vietnam. The company also plans to start building a wood pellet production facility in north Vietnam's Yen Bai prefecture, targeting to complete construction in September 2024 and to begin sales in January 2025.
