Australia's Fortescue ships first Iron Bridge magnetite

Australian iron ore producer Fortescue Metals has shipped first ore from the 22mn t/yr Iron Bridge magnetite project in Western Australia to a customer in Vietnam.

Fortescue said in March that Iron Bridge would contribute less than 1mn t of 67pc Fe concentrate to its total target of 187mn-192mn t for the year to 30 June, as it delayed the start-up of production from March to April. The firm is due to release its April-June quarterly production figures on 27 July.

The Iron Bridge project is designed to increase the overall grade of Fortescue's products, but it remains unclear if it will remain a standalone product or be included in a blend with the firm's lower-grade direct shipping ores. The firm hopes to ship 10mn t of Iron Bridge concentrate in 2023-24.

As a standalone product, the concentrate can be used to produce lower-emissions steel by reducing the volumes of coking coal required in the process.

"High grade magnetite product will play an important role in lowering emissions in the steel industry, and Fortescue is moving at pace to ensure we are at the forefront of developing green steel technologies," Fortescue's chief executive Fiona Hick said.
