Tenaris upgrades Mexico OCTG mill, cuts CO2

Global pipemaker Tenaris has upgraded its seamless oil country tubular goods (OCTG) pipe mill in Veracruz, Mexico, to reduce its carbon intensity.

Tenaris has integrated a smart furnace model that uses predictive tools to analyze the metallic load of the 1.23mn metric tonnes (t)/yr electric arc furnace at the mill, the company said.

The tool predicts the metallic yield, energy and oxygen demand, electrode consumption, and anticipated carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. The model then uses a scrap mix optimization simulator to find the best mix of scrap to achieve low residuals with minimizing the cost of the feedstocks.

Through these tools Tenaris has been able to reduce CO2 emissions by 20pc while increasing electric consumption by only 3pc.

The tool increased the use of scrap while reducing pig iron, which has a higher CO2 content.
