A large amount of US WTI crude arrived at GOI Energy's 320,000 b/d Priolo refinery complex in Italy in September, for a third consecutive month. More is on route.

Argus tracking shows three tankers delivered 75,000 b/d of WTI in September, after 95,000 b/d arrived in August and 120,000 b/d in July. This is around 8.8mn bl of WTI in that time, around double the total deliveries of US crude at Priolo in the previous five years combined.

Trading firm Trafigura appears central in supplying the US crude. The company has a supply and offtake agreement with Cyprus-based GOI, which purchased Priolo from Russian private-sector Lukoil this year. Trafigura has introduced another Italian refiner, Saras, to cargoes of WTI, delivering supplies to its Sarroch plant on Sardinia since summer 2022.

Priolo received 245,000 b/d of crude in September, up from 195,000 b/d in August and the second highest monthly intake since GOI purchased the plant. Receipts were 195,000 b/d in the January-September period, compared with 245,000 b/d in all of 2022. The facility consists of two refineries — an 80,000 b/d unit in Augusta harbour and a 240,000 b/d unit at the Melilli oil terminal. The two appear unable to run over a combined 285,000 b/d (see chart).

September receipts comprised the 75,000 b/d of WTI, 65,000 b/d of Azeri BTC Blend, 55,000 b/d of Norwegian crude plus 25,000 b/d each of Caspian CPC Blend and UAE Das Blend. Argus assessed these at a weighted average gravity of 36.3°API and 0.8pc sulphur content, compared with 40.6°API and 0.6pc sulphur in August. Receipts in January-September averaged 38.5°API and 0.7pc sulphur, lighter than the heavier Urals-based crude slate in 2022 under Lukoil, which was around 35°API and 0.9pc sulphur.

A cargo of around 700,000 bl of WTI is heading to Priolo.

Last month the unit exported around 130,000t (970,000 bl) of 10ppm diesel to the Slovenian port of Koper, a transit hub for central Europe.
