Taiwan's TFC to build ammonia tanks to assist H2 plans

  • 04/10/23

Taiwan Fertilizer (TFC) plans to double its ammonia storage capacity in the next 2-3 years to help Taiwan meet its goals of reducing carbon emissions and developing a hydrogen economy.

The company plans to build two 20,000t ammonia storage tanks to add to its existing storage capacity, bringing the company's total ammonia storage capacity to 80,000t. Some of the ammonia will be converted to hydrogen as the company regards ammonia as a cost-effective way of bringing hydrogen to the domestic market.

The ammonia may also be used directly in the power sector, where the government has expressed support for co-firing ammonia at Taiwan Power's coal-based plants. TFC imports around 200,000 t/yr of ammonia, largely from Saudi Arabia, to support production at its NPK, ammonium sulphate and nitric acid facility at Taichung.
