AIFA airport becomes Mexico’s main cargo hub

The Felipe Angeles International Airport (AIFA) became Mexico's main cargo airport per tons handled in September, shifting jet fuel demand from Mexico City's international airport (AICM) to AIFA.

The AICM has long been Mexico's main airport, accounting for over 30pc of the jet fuel demand in the country. But in September, the migration of all 18 cargo-only airlines from AICM to AIFA was completed after the government banned cargo-dedicated airlines from operating at AICM.

The AIFA airport inaugurated on 21 March 2022 is one of the flagship projects of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador's administration.

AIFA handled 32,253 tons (t) of cargo in September, almost double the 18,891 t recorded by AICM, which saw a year-over-year reduction of 60pc after the ban took full effect in September, according to Mexico's civil aviation authority (AFAC) data.

The Queretaro and Toluca airports — the nearest alternative airports — also showed increases of 21pc and 25pc, respectively, in tons of cargo handled in September.

Jet fuel demand shifted from AICM to AIFA in September, partially because of the shift in cargo operations.

State-owned Airports and Auxiliary Services (ASA) sold 824,000 bl of jet fuel at AICM in September, down by 11pc from 922,000 bl compared with the same month of 2022, according to company data.

Meanwhile, ASA's jet fuel sales at AIFA rose by more than fourfold in September to 105,300 bl, the same data show.

Although the AICM still carries more than 15 times the passengers that AIFA does, demand for jet fuel in central Mexico may continue shifting from AICM to AIFA, as Mexico's return to top aviation safety rating and the reduction of flights at AICM will likely bring business to the newer airport.
