Multinational mining firm Rio Tinto today said it will fully transition the local haul fleet and heavy machinery at its Kennecott, Utah, integrated copper mine to renewable diesel (RD) beginning in the first quarter of 2024.

The move comes as part of an overall corporate objective of carbon neutrality by 2050. "Transitioning Kennecott completely to renewable diesel builds on a suite of decarbonisation initiatives that have reduced carbon emissions from the operation by 65pc since 2019," said chief operating officer Clayton Walker.

The transition is expected to reduce annual carbon emissions by about 495,000 t of CO2 equivalent.

Founded in 1870 and operating in 35 countries, Rio Tinto's global mining portfolio includes iron ore, copper, aluminum, lithium, and other materials. The Kennecott mine is currently Rio Tinto's only US operation.
