Vietnamese producer Long Son Petrochemical (LSP) has achieved on specification olefins production at its new mixed-feed cracker in Ba Ria-Vung Tau, south Vietnam.
LSP is a subsidiary of Thai petrochemical producer Siam Cement (SCG). The mixed-feed cracker has a nameplate capacity of 950,000 t/yr for ethylene, 400,000 t/yr for propylene and a 100,000 t/yr butadiene extraction unit. Downstream units are polymer-focused, with a 500,000 t/yr of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plant, a 500,000 t/yr linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) unit and a 400,000 t/yr polypropylene (PP) unit. The company expects its HDPE, LLDPE and PP production to fulfill domestic demand, with supplies available for export.
The company is conducting machinery testing and performance test runs at the LSP complex, it said on 26 December. LSP is ramping up cracker run rates following on-specification production of olefins, according to sources close to the company.
The LSP cracker can be fed a mixture of naphtha and propane as feedstock in a 30-70pc ratio.
The LSP complex lacks an aromatics unit. By-product pygas from LSP's cracker will be chanelled into SCG's petrochemicals complex in Rayong and Map Ta Phut, Thailand for further extraction. SCG will then deliver its benzene, toluene and xylene output back to Vietnam, company sources said.
