New S Korean nitric acid plant to raise ammonia imports

South Korean producer Hanwha plans to build a new 400,000 t/yr nitric acid production plant by 2025, which is expected to raise its ammonia import demand by 120,000 t/yr.

The nitric acid plant would be located at the Yeosu Industrial Complex, with the produced nitric acid to be mostly sold into the merchant market. Hanwha currently purchases around 70,000 t/yr of ammonia directly from various South Korean importers like Lotte Fine Chemicals, and will occasionally purchase small volumes from international traders. The importer receives about 6,000 t/month of ammonia cargoes, priced on an indexed formula price, and are all delivered to Incheon port.

South Korean ammonia importers procure ammonia mostly from southeast Asian and Middle Eastern suppliers on contractual term agreements. South Korea took approximately 1.1mn t of ammonia in 2023, with arrivals at around 90,000 t/month, according to Argus data. But this was slightly down by around 25pc compared to previous years, likely owing to the knock-on impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, higher ammonia prices and weaker downstream demand which had reduced import appetite.
