Australia's Strike sees long-term demand for gas

Western Australia- (WA) based independent Strike Energy expects new gas-fired power generation investment to spur greater demand for gas towards the end of the decade, as it reported its first full quarter production results.

The firm reported 1.81PJ (48mn m³) of gas output from its Walyering field in WA's onshore Perth basin for October-December, the first reporting period since it started sales from the project on 1 October.

The field located approximately 150km north of Perth, which has certified proved and probable reserves of 56PJ equivalent (PJe), produced about 20 TJ/d of sales gas and 159 b/d of condensate, Strike said. Output above 20 TJ/d was intermittent because of downstream maintenance on the Parmelia gas pipeline, which Strike said limited deliveries into its existing marketing arrangements.

Walyering's nameplate capacity of 33 TJ/d was reached on 24 December, the firm said this month, while it reported an average output of 23 TJ/d since 31 December.

Strike has completed reprocessing of Walyering's 3D seismic survey, "substantially improving" the resolution of the field and nearby prospects with plans to complete a reserves and resources review in the coming months.

"Based on improved nearfield prospectivity, Strike has commenced work in order to understand what is required to debottleneck the existing plant and what upgrades would be required to increase the Walyering production capacity to upwards of 40 TJ/d," the firm said on 29 January.

The delayed interim report from WA's parliament into the state's domestic gas policy now expected in early 2024, comments by WA premier Roger Cook on lifting onshore gas export bans by mid-year and the government's commitment to exiting coal-fired power generation by 2029 is likely to boost gas demand, Strike said, referencing a WA outlook by the Australian Energy Market Operator.

Strike completed the acquisition of Australian-listed exploration company Talon Energy, its 45pc joint-venture partner in Walyering during December, while it gained initial approvals for its 100pc-owned 40 TJ/d South Erregulla project in November. It did not specify a timeline for sanctioning development of the field.
