Automotive original equipment manufacturer (OEM) Magna expects the automotive build rate in North America to be little changed in 2024.
The company expects North American automakers to assemble 15.7mn vehicles in 2024, 100,000 more than they made last year, according to Magna's fourth quarter earnings released today.
That rate is expected to increase to an estimated 16.1mn vehicle assemblies in 2026.
The automotive industry in North America, which comprises the US, Canada and Mexico, is one of the largest consumers of steel and aluminum, with a 15.7mn run rate equaling roughly 15.5mn short tons (st) of steel and 3.8mn st of aluminum, according to estimates from the American Iron and Steel Institute.
Magna expects that global auto production will average 1pc growth a year during the 2023-2026 period.
In Europe, auto builds are expected to fall by 100,000 to 17.4mn units in 2024 from last year, falling by another 100,000 to 17.3mn in 2026.
Chinese auto companies are expected to produce 28.3mn vehicles in 2024, 300,000 fewer than 2023, then jump to 30.6mn in 2026.
Magna posted a profit of $271mn in the fourth quarter, up from a profit of $95mn in the same period of 2022. Full-year 2023 profit more than doubled to $1.2bn.
