Japanese firms tie up to build large ammonia carrier

Japanese shipping firm Mitsui OSK Lines (Mol) signed an agreement with shipping firm Asahi Tanker and southwest Yamaguchi prefecture-based ship operator Ikous today to build a large-scale domestic ammonia carrier.

The three companies aim to start commercial operations of the 10,000m³ vessel in 2028-29.

Mol restarted its ammonia transportation business in 2021 in line with the country's rising demand for cleaner energy. The country expects ammonia demand as a fuel to increase to 3mn t/yr by 2030 and to 30mn t/yr by 2050.

Separately, Japanese trading house Itochu signed a deal with Taiwan-listed dry bulk shipowner U-Ming Marine Transport on 22 March to develop large-scale carriers which use ammonia as a bunker fuel. This partnership will also enable joint ownership and operations of these carriers, Itochu said.

Japanese LPG importers such as Astomos and Eneos Globe have been already building very large gas carriers through which it is possible to deliver LPG and liquified ammonia at the same time. These carriers contain dual-fuel LPG engines using LPG and fuel oil bunker fuels.
