Mitsubishi launches LNG-fuelled RoRo vessel in Japan

Japan's Mitsubishi Shipbuilding launched an LNG-fuelled roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) vessel at Shimonoseki on 7 June, in line with the maritime sector's push for net zero carbon emissions.

The 49,500t Trans Harmony Green is the first of two dual-fuelled RoRo vessels under construction for Japanese RoRo shipping company Toyofuji Shipping's Asian routes. RoRo ships are vessels equipped with a ferry-type ramp for transport of wheeled cargo such as trucks and trailers.

The dual-fuel engine will be powered by LNG or diesel fuel and is expected to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 25pc compared with fuel-run ships with a similar structure, said Mitsubishi Shipbuilding. Sulphur oxide emissions are expected to reduce to near zero, with the handover of the vessel planned for late January 2025.

Japan has made progress in its support for energy transition in the maritime sector since early 2018 where the environment and transport ministries urged fuel optimisation through the construction of more LNG-fuelled vessels. Demand for alternative fuels have increased in the country with newer vessels emerging.

Imabari Shipbuilding has ordered from Mitsubishi Shipbuilding two additional fuel gas supply systems for its planned LNG-fuelled bulk carriers, with LNG fuel tanks to be delivered in the second half of 2025.

Japanese shipping company Nippon Yusen Kaisha has expanded to at least six LNG-fuelled car carriers, while planning to commission 45 alternative fuel operated ships to reduce scope 1 emissions between April 2023 and March 2031. Mitsui OSK Lines started operations for an LPG-fuelled very large gas carrier (VLGC) in late April this year, with another two dual-fuel VLGCs for LPG and ammonia currently ordered.
