Cliffs to idle Minn iron mine, cut pellet making

Integrated steelmaker Cleveland-Cliffs is cutting Minnesota iron ore production and laying off hundreds of workers.

The steelmaker is idling its Minorca iron ore mine and cutting production at its Hibbing Taconite mine, both located in Minnesota.

In filings with the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development, Cliffs said decreased steel demand in 2024 caused it to accumulate excess iron ore pellet inventories.

The company is idling Minorca and cutting Hibbing's production to rebalance capital expenditures and consume the excess pellets. Cliffs said layoffs could last longer than six months.

The Minorca mine has an annual production capacity of 3mn long tons (lt), while Hibbing Taconite has a capacity of 7mn lt, according to a recent regulatory filing by Cliffs.

In a 25 February earnings call, chief executive Lourenco Goncalves said he could have shuttered a mine and a half and reduced pellet production to improve Cliffs' fourth quarter results, during which the company lost $155mn. Cliffs lost $754mn for full-year 2024.

Goncalves' company filed a letter with the US Trade Representative on 11 March arguing that Brazilian pig iron imports into the US should have a 25pc Section 232 national security tariff placed on them. Cliffs argued that domestic US blast furnace steelmakers could provide domestically-produced pig iron to US consumers, most of whom are electric arc furnace (EAF) scrap-based steelmakers, and Cliffs' competitors.
