Corn harvest in Brazil's Mato Grosso begins

The 2024-25 winter corn harvest in Brazil's central-western Mato Grosso state is in its initial stage, with volumes still incipient.

The harvest reached 0.3pc of the expected area in the week ended 23 May, according to the state's institute of agricultural economics Imea.

That is below the pace at the same time a year ago, when the 2023-24 harvest reached 1.9pc of the total area. It is also behind the five-year-average of 1pc.

Work began in the week ended 16 May, but Imea has only released the first data now. The harvest reached 0.1pc n that initial week.

Mato Grosso's 2024-25 corn crop production is estimated in 48.9mn metric tonnes (t), up from 47.2mn t in the 2023-24 crop, according to Imea. Yields and planted area are projected at 114.5 60kg bags/hectare (ha) and 7.1mn ha, respectively. That compares with 115.6 bags/ha and 6.8mn ha in the 2023-24 crop.
