The EU's new tariff rate quotas for Ukrainian agricultural products on a 7/12 basis of yearly volumes came into force today.
The first-come, first-served quotas are open until the end of this year.
This new regulation comes after a three-year temporary suspension of import duties and quotas on Ukrainian agricultural exports following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The regulation grants firms access to the tariff-rate quotas for products originating in Ukraine. Quotas are set for a range of specific products, including 7/12th of 1mn t for wheat, 7/12th of 650,000t for corn, and 7/12th of 350,000t of barley.
The European Commission continues to negotiate a longer-term trading arrangement with Ukraine.
Farming industry body Copa Cogeca is urging policymakers to revise an agreement with Ukraine that establishes tariff rate quotas that are similar to those that existed before the war broke out. It said trade liberalisation with Ukraine had a "significant negative" impact on several EU agricultural and manufacturing sectors.
