Airbus 2Q commercial deliveries fall

Aerospace manufacturer Airbus' commercial aircraft deliveries fell in the second quarter from a year earlier, reflecting persistent supply chain constraints that have weighed on the company's ramp-up goals.

Total shipments in the second quarter fell to 170 jets from 181 in the prior-year period on declines in its main narrowbody and widebody programs, the France-based company reported on Tuesday. Shipments rose from 136 jets in the first quarter.

Quarterly shipments of aircraft in Airbus' A320neo family fell to 126 from 145 a year earlier, as the company continues to grapple with a shortage of Leap engines from CFM International — the joint venture between GE Aerospace and Safran. Deliveries of the company's smaller A220 regional jets rose to 24 from 16 in the same timeframe.

The airframer delivered 12 A350s in the latest three-month period, down from 14 a year earlier, while A330 deliveries rose to 8 from 6 in the same timeframe.

Airbus needs to accelerate shipments in the second half of 2025 to reach its full-year target of around 820 after deliveries totaled just 306 through the first six months of the year.

Still, Airbus faces potential headwinds outside of its current supply chain issues that could prevent the company from achieving its goal, including possible strike action at its UK facilities involved in wing production.

A US investigation into imports of commercial aircraft, jet engines and their associated parts, which could increase costs and stymy global trade flows, also has posed a challenge to the wider industry. The probe has drawn opposition from Airbus and other original equipment manufacturers, which have called on the US Commerce Department to maintain a zero-tariff environment.

Airbus booked 214 gross orders in the second quarter, or 198 net orders, after cancellations of 9 A320neos and 7 A350 freighters. The company's backlog as of 30 June stands at 8,754 aircraft.

The company's US rival Boeing increased its deliveries in the second quarter by 63pc to 150 aircraft, indicating the company's recovery efforts remain on track after a troublesome 2024.
