Brazilian mining company Vale boosted its copper production by 18pc to 92,600 metric tonnes(t) in the second quarter, the company's highest second-quarter output in six years.

Vale's copper output in the second quarter was up from 78,600t in the same period in 2024, Vale said Tuesday.

Production at the Salobo mine rose by 4,500t from a year earlier because of the start of the new Salobo 3 section. The company increased its copper processing capacity by 3mn t/yr in March and can now process 35mn t/yr at Salobo alone.

The increased processing capacity supports Vale's target of producing 900,000t/yr of copper within the next decade. The company's guidance projects output of 350,000-370,000t by the end of 2025.

Production at the Sossego mine increased by 5,200t because the mine processed higher-grade copper, Vale said.

Copper output from Canadian operations rose by 4,300t. Vale attributed the additional volume to improvements at the Voisey Bay underground mines and steady production from the Sudbury mines.

Total copper sales rose by 17pc in the second quarter, reaching 89,000t from 76,100t a year prior. The average price for copper fell by 2pc to $8,985/t from a year earlier.
