AIM loses New Brunswick scrap permit: Update

Adds comment from AIM in paragraph 5.

Canadian recycler American Iron and Metal (AIM) lost the salvage dealer license for its Moncton scrap yard in New Brunswick because of noise complaints and proximity to a public park.

The New Brunswick provincial government declined to renew AIM's permit for Moncton scrap yard because the minister of public safety determined it was not in the public interest, an 18 July letter to AIM says.

The scrap yard borders a neighborhood and has been the source of noise complaints. The minister also determined that the yard did not qualify for a new license because it is within 300m of a playground, public park or school, the letter said.

AIM has three months to file for a judicial review of the decision, according to the Department of Justice and Public Safety.

AIM said it bought the Moncton site in 2023 and has been working with the province to minimize impacts to the surrounding community.

"We are disappointed with the minister's decision, and as a result, AIM is now forced to consider its options moving forward," a lawyer for AIM said.

AIM has come under scrutiny for its New Brunswick operations in light of a fire that broke out at its Port Saint John location in 2023. The province revoked the license for that yard following the fire.
