The new owner of UK decoiler C Brown and Sons — based in the West Midlands — laid off 95pc of the company's staff on 15 August.

Private equity group HLD Group acquired the company from the Brown family in April.

Brown's has three decoiling lines and can process coil up to 2m wide. It has faced intense competition in recent years, which has led to a significant decline in sales and turnover. Brown's turnover fell to £42.6mn ($57.6mn) in the year to May 2024, from £57.3mn a year earlier, taking its pre-tax loss to £1.42mn, according to its most recent financial results.

At the time of the initial acquisition, multiple market sources suggested HLD Group could arrange a pre-pack administration and repurchase the company, including the land. Since the takeover, several suppliers reported having their credit insurance withdrawn, if not reduced dramatically.

HLD Group director Lindsay Khan has engaged the same auditor 39 times since 2012, according to filings for steel supplier Benbow Steels, which fell into administration in February. Benbow had been owned by Tegu Group, which was run by Lindsay Khan's son, Jack Khan.
