Prices paid to US producers slowed in August even as inflation on goods continued to rise in the face of President Donald Trump's on-again/off-again tariff policies.

Prices paid to producers (PPI) rose by an annual 2.8pc in August, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported Wednesday, slowing from 3.3pc in July, which was the largest increase since February 2025. Core PPI, which strips out volatile food and energy, rose by an annual 2.8pc in August, compared with 3.4pc in July.

PPI for goods, with a weighting of about a third of PPI since December, rose by an annual 2.1pc in August following 1.9pc in July.

Energy fell by 1.9pc in August following a 3.2pc decline in July, BLS said.

The PPI report comes one day ahead of a consumer price index (CPI) report that is expected to show CPI accelerated to 2.9pc in August, according to analysts' forecasts, from 2.7pc in July. These are the last two inflation reports due out before the Federal Reserve's policy meeting next week, at which it is widely expected to cut its target rate by a quarter point, for the first cut this year. The Fed has signaled recently it is increasingly focused on weakening labor market conditions even as it remains attentive to blowback from Trump's tariff, immigration and fiscal policies.

On a monthly basis, PPI contracted by 0.1pc in August, following a gain of 0.7pc in July and 0.1pc in June, BLS said. Core PPI shrank by 0.1pc on the month, following a monthly gain of 0.7pc in July and no change in June.

Annual PPI for services rose by an annual 2.9 in August following growth of 4pc in July.
