Vessel traffic to and from Pier G at the Port of Long Beach, California, will be halted today and possible tomorrow, following a cargo container accident Tuesday.
Sixty-seven shipping containers fell into the water from the cargo ship Mississippi at the port on Tuesday, according to the US Coast Guard (USCG) and other local and federal agencies. The cause of the incident has not been disclosed, but a temporary halt to cargo operations has been issued.
The basin serving Pier G, including terminals G212 through G214, is operated by Metro Ports andis where commodities such as sulfur, potash, petroleum coke and other dry bulk products are loaded, according to the Port of Long Beach.
The incident also halted marine traffic at Pier F, including terminal F211, which is operated by Koch Carbon and handles petcoke and other bulk materials, according to the USCG.
Cargo operations at Pier G are temporarily suspended, but truck activity at the terminal may continue. A reopening time has not been announced, but the earliest possible reopening is expected later today, according to a shipping agent.
The USCG has established a 500-yard safety zone around the vessel which has slowed vessel transits.
