UK-based metal recycler S Norton has expanded its port in Glasgow, Scotland, allowing larger vessels to berth, increasing the site's capacity and exports.

Merseyside-headquartered Norton has invested in extending the site's berth dredging, which will allow much larger vessels to dock, and has purchased a £2mn ($2.7mn) crane that can handle 6-7t of material in a single grab.

"This dredging operation has enabled the site to turn from servicing only the short-sea market, to welcoming deep-sea vessels capable of reaching destinations anywhere in the world," site manager Stevie Lambie said. "The ability to load deep-sea vessels is a game-changer for the facility and the regional economy, substantially expanding the scope and reach of our operations."

Around 150,000t of metal is exported per year from S Norton's Glasgow site, the company said, and the new investment should boost processing capacity.

The Glasgow port has shipped out five small vessels, mostly mini bulker class, carrying ferrous scrap to short-sea markets such as France and Portugal this year, data from vessel tracker Kpler shows.

Norton purchased the site, located in the King George V Docks, in December 2023 and announced the sale toward the end of the first quarter in 2024.

It purchased the site from Recycling Lives, a firm that has since sold off its metal recycling assets.
