Argentina wheat gains from weekend rain

Argentina's 2025-26 wheat crop benefited from rain over the weekend of 21-22 September that left behind good soil conditions in most regions, even though some low-lying areas are facing an increased risk of fungal infections.

Planted area with adequate-to-optimum soil moisture levels was reported at almost 82pc in the week ended 24 September, which is down from close to 89pc a week earlier despite the recent precipitation, according to the Buenos Aires Grain Exchange (Bage).

Crop conditions were normal-to-excellent in close to 97pc of the area, slightly lower than the prior week, according to Bage's latest report. Reports of fungal infections are increasing, and some low-lying areas in Buenos Aires province are still waterlogged, impeding the application of fertilizers and fungicides.

Wheat producers are optimistic about the current crop, which is "the best looking in at least four years", the Rosario Board of Commerce (BCR) said in its latest weekly report. Average yields in many areas are expected to range from 5 metric tonnes (t) to 6.5t per hectare (ha), and in some areas yields could reach 8t/ha. The average yield last year was 3t/ha, according to BCR.

Corn planting progresses

The favorable soil moisture conditions have also helped corn planting advance, Bage said. Planting progress more than doubled in the week to 12.3pc complete as of 24 September, reaching about 1mn ha compared to 700,000 ha in the same period last year, Bage reported.

The rainy weather last week slowed corn planting in Buenos Aires province, where some towns reported as much as 60mm of precipitation, according to BCR. Growers indicated more rain could reduce early corn planting, BCR said.

Limited area planted with corn was hit with hail last weekend, with reported damage to crops, according to BCR. The abundant rain in Buenos Aires province has also sparked some concerns about fungal infections.

Sunflowers, barley

Sunflower planting for the 2025-26 marketing year advanced 5.4 points in the week through 24 September, reaching 31pc complete, Bage said. That was nearly 13 points ahead of the five-year average for the date.

The crop was 100pc in normal-to-excellent condition, Bage reported. Last weekend's rain improved soil moisture levels in some parts of Buenos Aires province, but left behind sodden fields in others, Argentina's Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (SAGyP) said in its weekly report. Most of the barley crop is in good-to-very good condition, SAGyP said.
