Brazil's Bndes development bank and environment ministry (MMA) added another R126mn ($23mn) to the Amazon Fund to boost reforestation in the Amazon region.
The resources will fund 17 projects in the Amazon states of Acre, Amazonas, Maranhao, Mato Grosso, Para, Rondonia and Tocantins. Bndes and MMA forecast 4,600 hectares (ha) (46km²) of restored forests with the funding, but did not give a timeframe to implement the projects.
The Amazon Fund aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation and mitigate climate effects through social programs destined to indigenous and traditional peoples inhabiting the Amazon biome. Bndes and MMA are responsible for the fund, which has around R4.8bn in available resources, according to it.
The initiative is under the Amazon Restoration program, which is linked to the national reforestation policy Proveg. It aims to restore 12mn ha of land by 2030 as one of the measures to achieve Brazil's emission reduction targets under the Paris climate agreement.
Deforestation is one of Brazil's flagship issues for UN Cop 30 summit, which it will host in November in Belem, northern Para's capital. The country aims to end deforestation by 2030.
