China's CIMC Enric starts up biomethanol operation

  • Market: Biofuels
  • 16/12/25

China's biomethanol producer CIMC Enric held a commercial operation date (COD) ceremony on 16 December at its 50,000 t/yr biomethanol plant in Zhanjiang, Guangdong province.

The plant uses fluid-bed biomass gasification technology to convert forest residues into biomethanol. The company obtained ISCC EU certification on 3 November 2025 for its biomethanol, with over 85pc greenhouse gas (GHG) savings on an ex-factory basis. The facility is currently operating at around 80pc of capacity.

CIMC Enric signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the local Suixi county government at the event for a second phase of the project, which would expand capacity by a further 200,000 t/yr to reach 250,000 t/yr in 2027.

CIMC Enric's new biomethanol unit is China's first newly built pure biomass gasification-based green methanol plant to enter commercial operation, with trial production started in early November. The company supplied its first batch of biomethanol to Shenzhen port for its first green methanol bunkering to COSCO on 3 December.
