Brazil could provide oilfield services and equipment to Venezuela if oil production recovers there, the executive president of the sector's trade association Abespetro, Telmo Ghiorzi, said.

Abespetro has spoken to Brazil's foreign ministry about opportunities in Venezuela, as well as in Guyana and Suriname, Ghiorzi said at an Abespetro event in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday.

There is renewed interest in Venezuela after the country moved to open its oil sector under pressure from the US, following the 3 January arrest of former president Nicolas Maduro.

But both the political and regulatory situation remain very unstable, Ghiorzi said. "It's very hard to make a decision now," he added.

Research firm Rystad Energy estimates Venezuela's oil reserves at 60bn bl, more than three times Brazil's proven reserves.

Brazilian state-controlled Petrobras has also voiced cautious interest in operating in Venezuela.
