Annual seaborne urea imports to the US were flat with year-ago levels in the 2025-26 fertilizer year ending 30 June, despite record-high monthly imports in March.

Seaborne imports reached 4.75mn metric tonnes (t) in the 2025-2026 fertilizer year — which runs from July through June — and equalled the 2024-25 period's total imports, according to US Census Bureau (USCB) data and Argus estimates. Both years exceeded the five-year average by about 2.7pc, or roughly 120,000t.

Seaborne urea imports reached a record monthly level of 1.26mn t in March, surpassing March 2025 imports of 995,000t in a 26pc increase, according to USCB data. Total urea imports in March exceeded the month's previous five-year average of 706,000t by 78pc.

The strait of Hormuz closure following the US-Israel war against Iran disrupted Middle Eastern urea supply and cut off 35pc of global urea trade, causing the US to rely on Russian imports more heavily. Russian urea imports made up 42pc of the 2025-26 financial year's total imports, an increase from 36pc of the total the previous year. Both years exceeded the previous five-year total percentage of 25pc, according to USCB data.

The US was already relying more significantly on Russian urea in the 2024-25 year after 2025 tariffs caused Midde Eastern urea prices to rise significantly, turning US buyers to tariff-exempt Russian fertilizer producers.

Total urea imports from the Middle East in the 2025-26 year made up 35pc of US urea imports, a significant 12pc decrease from the previous five-year average of 47pc. Imports increased by 1 percentage point from 34pc the previous year after urea was exempt from tariffs when the policy was modified in November 2025.
