London, 6 July (Argus) — Kuwait's state-owned sulphur producer KPC has set the July Kuwait Sulphur Price (KSP) at $950/t fob Kuwait, up by $145/t from the June KSP of $805/t fob. Freight rates as of 2 July were $108-116/t for a 30,000-35,000t shipment to Chinese ports. This implies a delivered cost of $1,058-1,066/t cfr, with additional insurance premiums raising prices further on a delivered basis. This is a record level for the KSP, at $460/t above the previous record set at $490/t fob in June 2022. New York, 1 July (Argus) — Republican US House members, including speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana), are urging President Donald Trump to not renew a waiver on domestic shipping requirements issued following the outbreak of the US-Iran war, according to a letter seen by Argus . "We write to respectfully request that the current Jones Act waiver be allowed to expire as scheduled on 16 August 2026 and encourage you to utilize alternative policy tools to address fuel and fertilizer costs while preserving the strength of the American maritime industry," 52 House Republicans said in the 30 June letter. The Merchant Marine Act of 1920, also known as the Jones Act, stipulates that shipments between US ports must be carried on vessels that are US-built, US-flagged and US-crewed. The current Jones Act waiver was first issued on 17 March on the basis of national security and was later extended by 90 days. It is unclear whether the Trump administration will decide to extend the waiver. "Foreign-flagged vessels have operated under the waiver even in circumstances where US-flagged vessels were available, creating an understandable concern about the effect on American jobs, manufacturing and investment," the Republican lawmakers said in the letter. "The Jones Act waiver has become a loophole exploited by adversarial countries to erode America's maritime dominance." The national security pretense of the waiver, and its potential negative effect on the US domestic shipping community at a time where the administration has made revitalizing shipbuilding a priority, has come under increased scrutiny from domestic maritime stakeholders. London, 1 July (Argus) — Indian importer Coromandel has agreed a price of $1,700/t P2O5 cfr India with 30 days credit for third-quarter phosphoric acid deliveries with Jordanian producer JPMC. The price is up by $340/t P2O5 from the second quarter, largely driven by firm sulphur prices. Prices for dry bulk sulphur to India rose by 49pc over the second quarter. London, 1 July (Argus) — Abu Dhabi's state-owned Adnoc has set its July sulphur official selling price (OSP) for the Indian subcontinent at $1,000/t fob Ruwais, up by $140/t from its June OSP. This is the highest level so far for the OSP, according to Argus records, $180-200/t above the previous record reached in June-August 2008, when the OSP hit $800-820/t fob. Adnoc's July OSP implies a delivered price of $1,105-1,108/t cfr India, with the freight cost for a 40,000-45,000t shipment to the east coast of India last assessed at $105-108/t on 25 June. Additional costs such as insurance premiums on top of higher bunker costs could elevate delivered price levels further.
