South Korean battery maker Samsung SDI has signed a 1GWh agreement to supply energy storage systems (ESS) to US utility-scale storage developer Alpha Omega Power (AOP), increasing their combined contracts to 1.5GWh.
The deal, signed by Michigan-based subsidiary Samsung SDI America, adds to an initial contract agreed late last year. AOP will use the systems in large-scale projects in the Western Electricity Coordinating Council and Electric Reliability Council of Texas power markets, with construction scheduled to start next year.
Samsung SDI will supply its Samsung Battery Box (SBB) 1.7 — a 20ft containerized system using prismatic nickel cobalt aluminium cells, with energy density 17pc higher than its predecessor. All cells and modules will be made in Kokomo, Indiana, by StarPlus Energy, Samsung SDI's joint venture with carmaker Stellantis, with delivery by the end of this year.
AOP's chief executive said the agreement strengthens its domestic supply chain.
Samsung SDI claimed it is the only non-Chinese supplier of prismatic ESS batteries in North America and expects further orders from talks with other US customers.
In August, Samsung SDI bought General Motors' 49.99pc stake in their SynergyCells joint venture plant under construction in New Carlisle, Indiana, which will initially make ESS batteries. The buyout extends the US carmakers' retreat from battery ventures with South Korean partners as electric vehicle demand undershoots expectations.
